The NBA is Live on Twitter

NBA player Charlie Villanueva of the Milwaukee Bucks Twittered during his team’s game against the Boston Celtics on March 15th and got himself in trouble with the coach.

During halftime with the games tied at 41, Charlie Villanueva sent a tweet to fans,

“In da locker room, snuck to post my twitt.  We’re playing the Celtics, tie ball game at da half.  Coach wants more toughness.  I gotta step up.”

Coach Scott Skiles had this to say,

“You know, we don’t want to blow it out of proportion but anything that gives the impression that we’re not serious and focused at all times is not the correct way we want to go about our business.”

Charlie Villanueva seems to love his Twitter and willing to fight for his right to Twitter..

“About to take my nap, but I’m looking for some answers here, what’s the difference between halftime twitting and halftime interview?”

“So if I do a halftime interview, am I not being focus”

Despite his numerous spelling and grammar errors in his “tweets” not “twits”,  he has a point.  I think it is less distracting and more entertaining than the the stupid cameras filming them during half time.  I think it great the way he is interacting with his fans.  Lot of basketball players don’t give a damn about their fans who pay for the players’ million dollar contracts.  This is a great way to bridge the gap between the players and their fans.  I hope the league or teams don’t make the mistake and try to ban the use of Twitter by its players.  They should embrace  and take advantage of the technology.  It can attract and retain so many fans without costing the NBA a single cent.  NBA, be smart.  Remember what happened the Music industry when they decided new technology was a stupid idea?

By the way, he stepped up after halftime and the team went on to win the game against the Celtics.
